AYURVEDA FOR FERTILITY AND PROCREATION – INFERTILITY ISSUES IN MEN

We believe after reading our previous blogs/articles on Fertility & Procreation, most of you must now have a better understanding with regard to how individuals with specific “Prakruti” (mind-body constitutions) interact with their spouses/partners who have a mind-body constitution which is either similar to, or different from them.

Here, we share with you some specific knowledge on the subject of “Fertility”.

Most of us are aware that in our modern society, the cases of infertility are increasing day-by-day, and in most cases, the causes of infertility are not known. In many of these cases, couples who try to start a family and do not succeed in conceiving, cannot find anything abnormal when they go for medical check-ups. And then they are advised to try IUI or IVF, and some couples are still unsuccessful in spite of trying IUI and IVF.

What are some reasons for infertility in men and women?

Infertility in men:

Generally, the issues men experience are oligospermia (insufficient sperm count, poor motility of sperms, unhealthy/deformed sperms, dead sperms or the life span of the sperms is not long enough to survive till the ovulation happens); erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, insufficient quantity of semen emitted, acidic quality of semen and inappropriate consistency of semen.

The Ayurvedic solution is certain herbs which are recommended in Ayurveda to address the issues mentioned above, eg. Ashwagandha (winter cherry/withania somnifera), Shatavari (Indian Asparagus), Kauncha beej (the magic velvet bean/Mucuna pruriens) and Gokhru/Gokshuru (puncture vine/Devil’s weed/Tribulus Terrestris).

To get more information on Ashwagandha and Shatavari, please read our earlier blogs on these topics, posted on our website.

Kauncha beej (Mucuna Pruriens) are the seeds of the herbal plant called Kapikacchu. The seeds of this plant are used in Ayurveda to enhance fertility & virility in men and women, though it is more beneficial for men. The seeds help to improve the functioning of the testicles, prostate gland and Cowper’s gland, and is considered one of the best and most effective aphrodisiac.

When the seed is made into a powder & consumed, it is helpful to correct erectile dysfunction, improve the consistency of semen, make the semen more alkaline, increase the quantity and improve the quality of semen, increase the motility & prolong the life span of sperms.

Gokhru (Tribulus terrestris) is a herbal plant which has been used in Ayurveda for centuries to correct sexual weakness in men. The Luteal hormone in Gokhru is very effective in increasing testosterone in men, thus enhancing sexual power of a long lasting nature.

This wonderful herb also increases the quantity of vital fluid in men and makes it more alkaline. This is also helpful in improving the health of the bladder and prostate gland, thereby resolving problems relating to erection, premature ejaculation, etc.

All these herbs should be made into powders & mixed in equal proportion; men with specific Prakruti (mind-body constitution) should take the mixture as mentioned below:

A) For men who have Vata (air) as the predominant dosha (element):

They can mix 1 tablespoon of this mixture in about 300 ml fresh cow’s milk, together with ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder and ½ teaspoon psyllium husk, and boil it for about 7 – 8 minutes on a medium flame, while stirring it regularly. Then pour it in a cup and drink it whilst it is still warm. Ground rock sugar can be added as a sweetener.

B) For men who have Pitta (fire) as the main dosha (element):

They should mix 1 tablespoon of this mixture in about 300 ml fresh cow’s milk, together with ¼ teaspoon green cardamom seed powder, and boil it for about 7 – 8 minutes on a medium flame, while stirring it regularly. They can drink it hot/warm, adding a little rock sugar as sweetener; OR they can cool it down to room temperature and drink it after adding 1 – 2 tablespoons of pure/raw honey to it.

C) For men with Kapha as a predominant dosha (element):

They can mix 1 tablespoon of this mixture in about 300 ml fresh cow’s milk/plain water, together with ¼ teaspoon dry ginger powder, and boil it for about 7 – 8 minutes on a medium flame while stirring it regularly. Then pour it in a cup and drink it whilst it still hot/warm.
